The origin of this web quest comes form the concern for the growing number of young people that are overweight for their age. While I was in graduate school I took a course in nutrition and the professor made it very clear that loosing and/or gaining weight was based on a very simple formula. Loose weight, burn more calories then you take in. Gain weight is take in more calories then you are burning off. I've seen this personally come to fruition. In the last year I've lost close to 40 pounds and it has been done simply by cutting my food intake.
Life styles today are vastly different form that of 30 years ago. Even with the explosion of recreational sports teams a large number of students lead very sedentary lives. Because of this it is very important that they learn to select foods that are good to eat, yet are healthy for them.
In this web quest students will first be asked to look at their current eating habits exam the types of foods that they are eating and how many calories they are really taking in. Once they have looked at what they are doing they will look at what they should be doing. But in order to change their diet they have to find foods that they will like to eat, be readily available and menus that they can eat.
The students will be in groups of three so that when it comes to looking at preparing for good menus each one will be responsible for one of the meals during the day. Each member will prepare a weeks worth of meals for the meal that they are responsible for.
Their final project will be to present Power Point presentation explaining all of the information that the group as gathered.

The eating habits of you and your fellow detainees have been found to be substandard. For that reason you have been placed in Nutrition Detention. You will remain in detention until you have learned why your eating habits are below expectations. To get out of detention you will need to explain why your current habits are not acceptable and how you are going to change your ways and improve your eating habits
